Day Use

No special permission is required for day use below treeline. If you are going to hike or climb above treeline, even on a day trip, a minimum of four people is required and the group must register with Headquarters for permission at least two weeks prior to their hike using the enclosed forms. Down below treeline, in the interested public safety, we strongly discourage people from traveling alone in the winter; party size of at least two people is strongly recommended, 3 or 4 is better!
Day users are requested to check in and out at Park gates, volunteer registration points or Park Headquarters, by phone or whatever is more convenient. This is for the safety of users in the event of an accident or emergency and helps us keep statistics on Park use.
The following equipment is strongly recommended as a minimum for all cross-country ski or snowshoe trips below treeline in the Park:
  • Topographic or trail map
  • Compass
  • Sunglasses or goggles
  • First-aid kit
  • Matches in waterproof container
  • Flashlight
  • Appropriate clothing for rapid weather changes
  • Spare ski tip for cross-country skis
  • Axe
